BASIC INFO

WHAT IS COVID-19?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment.  Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it's important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).

WHAT DOES QUARANTINE MEAN?

In response to suspected or confirmed coronavirus exposure, some have been asked to self-quarantine. And while it’s highly recommended that you do, these quarantines are currently voluntary.

Quarantines are for people or groups who don’t have symptoms but were exposed to the sickness. A quarantine keeps them away from others so they don’t unknowingly infect anyone.

HOW DO I AVOID IT?

To prevent infection and to slow transmission of COVID-19, do the following:

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or clean them with alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Maintain at least 1 metre distance between you and people coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • Refrain from smoking and other activities that weaken the lungs.
  • Practice physical distancing by avoiding unnecessary travel and staying away from large groups of people.

DOING OUR PART

We all have a part to play:

  • If you experience symptoms of the potential virus, you are asked to remain at home and inform your manager and GM immediately at the first signs of feeling ill (coughing and/or sneezing and/or fever). Please contact Ottawa Public Health at 613-580-6744
  • Manager and GM are to inform HR immediately of any case you are aware of that impacts employees.
  • If you see or hear someone who is unwell in the work environment, please approach your manager and we will determine best decision case by case.
  • You must inform your manager of any upcoming personal travel (outside of the country) as of March 12th, onwards to “hot zones”, which are defined as current level 3 risk countries. You can check the status on the Government of Canada website under travel advisories. We will be asking you to get approval from your General Manager and HR before you return to work in these cases.
  • You must disclose and self-quarantine if you have been in contact with anyone confirmed infected or who has recently traveled to a high-risk area as determined by the CDC/WHO in the last 14 days. You may be asked to stay home for 14 days. We will determine the absence details for these on a case by case basis.
  • We are requiring managers and employees at all locations postpone or cancel large group (25 people and up) in-person meetings, with staff and/or vendors until further notice. Decisions on upcoming events will be communicated shortly by your GM.
  • All business travel will be cancelled until further notice
